Recognizing Your Photographic Style
Do you have a recognizable style in your photography? Have you ever tried to define it for yourself? One of the most empowering moments for a photographer is the realization that you do have a unique style. You have a unique perspective on the world which comes out in your photos.
If you have not yet experienced the defining moment of recognizing your style, it can seem elusive and unattainable, but finding your style is not as complex as it seems. While investing in equipment, information and advice are essential for growth as a photographer, there is a simple key to unlock your potential and style that goes beyond technical. The key is found in connection of your heart and soul to your images. It is this connection which transcends technique, and makes your images into something more; something wholly you.
Your style is there, within you, from the moment you start taking photographs. You create an avenue for expression as you develop the practical knowledge to create images. You have to know how to use your tools, but being technically great with the tools does not create style alone.
The creation of style truly begins as you follow your interests in photography. When you identify what aspects resonate with you and you seek out more opportunities to create images which matter to you, you are defining your style. In the process you may challenge the rules you’ve learned, discarding some, keeping some, and creating new ones of your own. You have to go deep inside, breaking away from external influences, to find what motivates you to continue taking photographs. Uncover the aspects of photography that continue to drive you to learn and grow, to capture the next image, for yourself. Your motivation is unique to you and provides the connection to your heart and soul, the key to your style.
Recognizing your style starts simply. Find what motivates you. Define the aspects connecting your images to your heart and soul. Create more opportunities to explore the parts of photography with which you truly resonate. When you find those interests, follow them but never stop testing them. Explore new things in your photography, both variations on what you already enjoy and completely new directions. Continue to push yourself outside of your comfort zone. And as you do, ask yourself – is this still where I want to be? Does this direction resonate with me? When you answer yes or no, you refine your path. You hone the edge of your style by continually challenging it. You either gain clarity on your current path or you change your direction, forging an even deeper connection with your images.
The more connected you are to the photographs you create, the more they resonate with you, the more they will express you. And the more they express you, the more they will stand out — as your signature style.
